The IPSA - HSE Summer School for Methods of Political and Social Research is one of the IPSA summer schools on methods, known for their excellence in professional methods training. Being the first IPSA school in Russia, the IPSA-HSE offers a wide variety of courses on qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as specialized courses and lectures.

The IPSA-HSE participants have the opportunity to master their skills in cutting-edge research methods, advance their professional knowledge, join the global network of political and social scholars and combine high quality training with a wonderful cultural experience in St. Petersburg.

Terms of Participation in Q & A
Question:
How many classes will I have? When will they take place?
Answer:
The general courses methods consists of 36 academic hours, including 18 hours of lectures and 18 hours of practice, as well as 36 hours of self-education (ECTS 2 credits overall). The classes are organized from Monday to Friday;

The course on the Introduction to Statistics in R takes place on 26-28 July 2018 and consists of 18 academic hours of training with 18 hours of self-education (ECTS 1 credit).

The course on How to Study Russian politics consists of 10 workshops from July 27 to August 10, 2018. The classes are held after lunch and last for 1,5 hours each.
Question:
Will I get ECTS credits and transcript for the courses? What are the terms?
Answer:
Yes. Each student attending the classes will receive an official transcript of records indicating the courses taken and the ECTS credits.

Each student must attend all classes and be active in completing the tasks to get credits.
Question:
What is the course on the Russian politics about?
Answer:
This course pursues two goals. First, to get you acquainted with the most topical issues in the Russian politics. Secondly, to show you how the methods you are studying can be applied to the real cases of the Russian politics research.
Question:
Can I take just one course?
Answer:
Surely, but we highly recommend you to take the opportunity to get a substantive level of knowledge in about two weeks. Also you will have more time to learn St. Petersburg better.

How can I pay the fee?
Answer:
The link for payment will be sent to the participants directly in early March.
Question:
What does my fee include?
Answer:
All fees include the education services, social events (welcoming and closing reception), a bus tour to St. Petersburg (except the Introduction to Statistics in R), coffee-breaks and course materials. For international students the fee also includes a visa invitation and its express mail delivery (if applicable).

All other expenses (travel, visa, accommodation, lunches) should be covered by participants.
Question:
Can I get a refund if I cancel my participation?
Answer:
We plan our final time-table depending on a number of students enrolled in a course. We reimburse the fee if the course you've chosen is cancelled and neither of our course suggestions suit you. All other cases are specified in the offer.

Can I get scholarship / travel grant?
Answer:
We are considering financial opportunities to give funds to partially cover students' expenses, and seeking for external scholarship program. Should we have some, they will be certainly available on the web-site.

Where does the School takes place?
Answer:
The School's venue is the Kochubey-Center, also known as the Management Training Center of the Higher School of Economics. It is situated in Pushkin, a close suburb of St. Petersburg and a nice place for study and sightseeing.
Question:
Will I have time for tourism? Do you provide a cultural program?
Answer:
We offer a complimentary guided bus sightseeing tour to St. Petersburg for all participants on Wednesdays, August 2 and 9, with some free time in St. Petersburg. You are also welcome to explore the city on your own, since Pushkin is quite close and the city center can be easily reached. We are always happy to help you in arranging your program. Question:
Should I get a visa to travel to Russia?
Answer:
Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Russia. It can take time for a visa to be issued, hence the application process should began not earlier than 2 months prior to an expected date of the visit.

We provide all participants with the visa invitation. Please note that the visa invitation from the HSE can only be issued upon the receipt of a tuition fee payment.
Question:
Where can I stay in Pushkin?
Answer:
The are two possible options for accommodation, both are at the expense of participants:

1) accommodation in Managment Training Center of HSE (the school venue). The Center provides comfortable single and double rooms at affordable prices, as well as breakfasts, lunches and dinners at extra cost (special menu is available).

2) students are free to choose accommodation off campus, there are several hotels and hostels nearby. However, we advise to book rooms well in advance, since June is the high tourist season in St. Petersburg.

Venue
Lectures and workshops will be organized at the Kochubey - Center (Management Training Center) of the Higher School of Economics. The venue is equipped with all necessary facilities and up-to-date equipment to study and live.

The building of the Center is also a cultural monument, being a former mansion of the Russian aristocrat Vasily P. Kochubey and presenting nice pieces of the 19th century architecture and design. The Center is easily reached from St. Petersburg and is in a walking distance from Pushkin's main places of interest.

You may book on-campus accommodation at the Kochubey - Center at special rates, as well as to book lunches and dinners there at affordable prices.
